Mike Flanagan’s new Netflix series is finally here! The Fall of the House of Usher is now streaming, and like any work of his, it’s worth checking out.
Loosely based on Edgar Allan Poe’s short story of the same name and other works, The Fall of the House of Usher follows ruthless twin siblings Roderick and Madeline Usher, who seize a chance to secure their future and fortune by making a dangerous deal that comes with a price.
This shady deal gives them the opportunity to build an empire of wealth, privilege, and power in a corrupt pharmaceutical company called Fortunato Pharmaceuticals. But everything comes crumbling down decades later when past secrets come to light, and the heirs to the Usher dynasty begin to mysteriously die in brutal ways at the hands of a mysterious woman from their past. But who is this woman, and why is she out to get the Ushers?
Spoilers from The Fall of the House of Usher ahead!
The mysterious woman from Roderick and Madeline Usher’s past is Verna. We see her many times throughout the series. She’s a shape-shifting demon/Angel of Death/immortal being that Roderick and Madeline meet in the year 1980 at a bar on New Year’s Eve. However, they don’t know she’s an immortal being when they meet her. But they do find her strange since she somehow knows they have just killed a man, their boss Rufus Griswold.
That night, Verna basically cuts them a deal saying that they can have whatever they desire but at a cost. She tells them that she can make them CEO and COO of Fortunato Pharmaceuticals with no legal consequences attached for their entire lives, but only if they agree to her part of the deal.
For the deal to go through, Roderick and Madeline have to agree to let their bloodline die with them. So, whenever they die, their kids must die as well. Also, both Roderick and Madeline have to die together. One can not outlive the other. In the end, Roderick and Madeline accept the terms and live a good life until it’s almost time for them to die.
In the present time, all of Roderick’s kids begin to die because of the deal he and Madeline made with Verna decades back. Verna has come to collect since Roderick and Madeline will die soon. She starts killing off the heirs one by one until Roderick and Madeline are the only ones remaining. The twin duo ultimately meet their demise as they fight in their childhood home that comes crumbling down with them inside.
The Fall of the House of Usher is now streaming only on Netflix.
