Real meaning of Electric Slide song explained as raunchy rumor swirls

Find out the real meaning of the Electric Slide song as racy rumors continue to flood social media in 2023.

The track, officially called Electric Boogie, was originally recorded by Marcia Griffiths and Bunny Wailer in 1976 and released in 1983.

It’s one of the most famous dance songs of all time and is known for its corresponding dance routine called the Electric Slide.

Choreographer, pianist and Broadway performer Richard L. Silver created the dance in 1976 from a demo of the Bunny Wailer recording.

It’s played at parties, bar mitzvahs, weddings and other occasions across the world – and here’s its real meaning…

Electric Slide doesn’t have a raunchy meaning

Internet rumors have long suggested the well-known track is about a vibrator, but that’s not actually the case.

The lyrics do hilariously fit, but Bunny Wailer’s team confirmed it’s definitely not true in a statement to EDM.com in 2018.

“At no time have I ever lent credence to a rumor that the song was inspired by anything other than Eddie Grant’s Electric Avenue,” he said.

“To state otherwise is a falsehood and offends my legacy, the legacy of the singer Marcia Griffiths, and tarnishes the reputation of a song beloved by millions of fans the world over.”

Real meaning of the Electric Slide song

The song is all about “positive vibrations” and joy in life, Marcia Griffiths told The Blast in 2018 – and she was quite offended by the vibrator rumors.

“I don’t sing about vibrators … I sing to teach, educate and uplift,” she continued before explaining the story behind the viral hit.

The musician bought a music box while performing in Toronto, Canada, and took the trinket home to Jamaica to show Bunny Wailer.

He then wrote the song in less than 24 hours. Marcia said: “I bought that little box and out of it came a beautiful hit song that inspired Jamaicans.”

If you do want a raunchy track, TikTok’s Margarita Song about becoming increasingly sexual the more alcohol you drink is being hailed a ‘summer 2023 anthem’.

Racy rumor goes viral again in 2023

It’s been five years since the false vibrator rumor emerged and it’s suddenly taken over the internet once again in 2023.

One person wrote on Twitter: “How old were you, when you found out the Electric Slide was a song about a vibrator?”

“I was today years old when the song electric slide was about a vibrator!” said another.

A third person added: “How old were you when you realized the electric slide is about a vibrator.”

It’s not – case closed!
