Former Australian Crawl frontman James Reyne

FORMER Australian Crawl frontman James Reyne is planning a reunion of sorts with his classic rock supergroup.

Reyne, who went solo after the Boys Light Up hitmakers split in 1986, is putting together what he describes as “the closest thing fans will ever get to an Australian Crawl reunion.”

The singer-songwriter, not known for nostalgic tendencies, is promising a “no holds barred, full band, rock and roll assault playing the Aussie Crawl songbook.”

The Crawl, formed on the Mornington Peninsula in 1978, is one of Australia’s most beloved bands, born from a seminal pub rock scene of peers like INXS and Midnight Oil.

Their many hits include Boys Light Up, Downhearted and Restless.

But tragedy struck Australian Crawl after they disbanded, with the untimely deaths of founding member Brad Robinson, and Guy McDonough, both guitarists.

Reyne said the sad loss of friends and musicians made reunion plans impossible.

But he said his upcoming shows, billed as James Reyne Plays Australian Crawl: The Crawl Files Live, is the closest thing to a regrouping.

Reyne said: “Over the years we’ve often been asked if this could ever happen. Now is the time.

“You will never see Australian Crawl again. It just isn’t possible. This is the next best thing.

“We’re playing all Crawl.”

They will perform at Palms At Crown on August 1 and 2. Tickets are on sale now.

Reyne’s planned ‘reunion’ shows follows renewed interest in the pub rock era.

INXS have dominated the album charts after their Never Tear Us Apart biopic was a massive ratings hit in February.

Hunters And Collectors played a run of reunion shows last month.

An Australian Crawl greatest hits compilation, released in January, also topped the charts.
