AC Milans Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara set to leave club

AC Milan technical director Paolo Maldini and sporting director Ricky Massara are set to depart the club.

Gerry Cardinale informed Maldini in a meeting that they would be dismissed, with the owner of Milan wanting to use a different recruitment strategy.

Maldini’s departure may come as a shock to Milan supporters given his status at the club.

The 54-year-old spent his entire 25-year playing career at Milan between 1984 and 2009, winning Serie A seven times and the Champions League on five occasions.

Maldini returned to Milan in 2018 after accepting an offer to become the sporting strategy and development director of the club. He was promoted to technical director one year later.

During his time as technical director, Milan won the 2021-22 Serie A title, their first in 11 years, with Maldini being instrumental in bringing in young talents like Theo Hernandez, Rafael Leao and Fikayo Tomori.

Massara, 54, also played an influential role, having been made sporting director of the Italian side in 2019. He and Maldini were recognised for their efforts when both won sporting director of the year at the 2022 Globe Soccer Awards.

Milan, however, failed to successfully defend their Serie A title this season after finishing fourth in the table. They also reached the Champions League semi-finals, but were beaten comfortably by rivals Inter Milan.
